Ooooh, she's cheap! #2 - Wallpaper

Lately J and I have been discussing the merits of wallpaper. (You can just tell the excitement  hasn't gone out of our relationship ;) When we first moved into our current property a little over 2 years ago we did a very basic redecorate throughout and haven't got around to decorating any further since then. This summer, it's time! We're looking to paper one wall in both the bedroom and living room to bring some colour in, without overwhelming what are relatively small spaces. So when I found this Bamboo print Laura Ashley wallpaper in the charity shop...

...I was of course, super excited! I could not find the exact pattern on Laura Ashley's site for comparison so I'm guessing it's discontinued. So I found the two closest in style/colour that I could to demonstrate the savings involved here . Their pricing is pretty much standard with 90% of their wallpapers priced the same...

They currently have a sale on with the price per roll on certain lines reduced to £25 per roll. So even taking that price into account 3 rolls of Laura Ashley wallpaper would cost me £75 (or a staggering £111 at full price). That's a saving of either £72 or £108.

Admittedly I didn't set out to buy a specific wallpaper and manage to find it cheaper. Nor did I have a specific room scheme in mind. I came across the wallpaper and just snapped it up, because, well, it would be rude not to at £1 a roll!. Sometimes thrifting and saving money means being opportunistic and snapping up what you see, when you see it, and worrying about the specifics later. I knew I would find a use for this.
As it turns out, J doesn't like it. Grrr! MEN! Why can't they grasp the concept that they're not SUPPOSED to have opinions on interior decor and that they should let us do exactly what we want, because, well, we're just better at it?! Unfortunately, J is usually clear on what he doesn't like (usually anything I like), but frustratingly incapable of deciding what he does like. Which makes decision making around here a VERY slow process.

No matter, because I have also been toying with the idea of boarding and papering a wall in my summer house to make it a little less shed like and more homely to work in. So this paper is destined for good use, and another DIY project I have in mind....

Does your other half scupper your ideas for home decor or does he just let you get on with it?? If so, what's your secret!!

  1. No he bloody well doesn't just let me get on with it! He's got an opinion on everything to do with home decor and it drives me nuts. In his defence he has got extremely good taste and is supremely handy, so if he has an idea he can go off and make it himself (bah)! I vote for wallpaper in the summer house, I can't think of anything more lovely! x

  3. I really like that wallpaper! My husband is not DIY-orientated at all. He doesn't believe anything ever needs changed unless it is actually broken in some way, so it's up to me to push any changes. When I've done it, he usually agrees that it looks better than before! :)

    1. I don't know why we have to keep proving that we're right. They should know that by now surely ? ;)

  4. While I don't have your decorating problem, I agree about snapping it up when you find it. :) I mean, I just got my three-year-old her Easter dress that way--a $100+ dollar silk dress for $5 at a yard sale! It had some spots on it, but a trip to the drycleaners fixed that. And then I found baby sister's dress (that coordinated perfectly) on ebay during some idle websurfing. Also silk, and retailed for almost $200. It was more expensive at $20, but didn't need cleaning. And, of course, we got the girls complete summer wardrobes that way, too. Isn't thrifting fun?
